Varna Free University ‘Chernorizets Hrabar’ was founded in 1991. With a resolution of the 37th National Assembly from 21st July 1995 the University was given the status of a higher educational institution. Students are given both full-time and part-time training in all educational and qualification degrees according to the Law of Higher Education – Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctor’s Degrees. At present about 10 thousand students are trained in 35 specialities. Some of them are: Economic Management, Social Activities, Economics, International Economic Relations, Public Administration, Political Science, International Relations, Structural Engineering, Fashion Design, Art Textile, Space Design, Journalism, European Studies, etc. Among the main priorities of the process of education are computer and language courses. VFU is the first non-state university awarded an institutional accreditation for a period of 5 years. At present the university, which was founded fifteen years ago, gains recognition as an academic centre which successfully trains Bulgarian and foreign students in areas of priority for our country. At the same time it develops a scientific academic product which is internationally convertible and competitive. The youngest university of the sea capital is a worthy and reliable partner of academic structures from Europe, the USA and the countries from Asia. Business contacts and academic exchange with foreign universities and academic communities have become an established academic tradition. VFU ‘Chernorizets Hrabar’ is one of the initiators and the most active members of the Black Sea Universities Network. Students and lecturers from our university successfully take part in research and educational programs of the European Union such as Tempus, Erasmus, Leonardo and others. The University has at its disposal two buildings (both its own property), meeting all contemporary requirements for carrying out the educational process, students’ hostel, sports and medical centre, laboratories and artwork rooms, its own transportation, computer rooms with access to the Internet, a multifarious library with over 36,000 volumes of scientific and reference books and fiction, which annually adds more than 6,000 new titles, thousands of specialized foreign language newspapers and magazines, an university publishing house and a bookshop. On the eve of the university’s tenth anniversary the students received another highly professional acquisition – University Media Centre. It consists of educational university radio ‘Academica’ which makes programs for the university and the national radio (it broadcasts on the frequency of ‘Varna‘radio); university information agency which works under contracts with Reuters, Xinhua and Deutsche Welle. There is also a TV studio. The scientific and research and economic organizations with which VFU cooperates permanently grant their technical equipment so students can use it for practice and lecturers for scientific and application activity and above all things for national and international public projects in response to the challenges of globalizing information society. For all this VFU ‘Chernorizets Hrabar’ stands out as an integral part of the global virtual educational space of Europe and the world. |
