Russia in the global politics

The Master class „Russia in the Global Politics” is aimed at:

  • building in the students useful knowledge and skills for analyzing the most topical and dynamically developing area of a global and regional opposition – Russia and the post-Soviet area;
  • acquainting the students with the chief characteristics and the mechanisms, which form, and, at the same time, differentiate the political configurations after the end of the Cold  War;
  • analyzing from a different perspective the political-and-military and economic processes in Russia and the global world;
  • differentiating the chief components in the political models characterizing the priorities in the European-Eurasian region, where Russia is a global and regional factor.


The Master class consists of:

  • lecture module;
  • practical module;

There will be 3.0 ECTS credits awarded in total.

The programme for the course will be published no later than 15 February 2014.


Target group

The Master class with the summer school organized by VFU “Chernorizets Hrabar” is targeted at participants from the all over the world – students, doctoral students, managers, business people, politicians, etc., who would like to acquire knowledge, learn practical skills and gain some experience from the achievements of the Russian foreign policy doctrine.


Content/Objectives of the course

The main topics in the Master class are related to the issues of the nature and the specific characteristics of the Eurasian region, as well as to the alternatives of its development within the context of the global and regional priorities. Among the topics included in the course are:

  • The new global order through the perspective of the Russian foreign policy doctrine (2 academic hours).
  • Russia and the Euro-Atlantic community of states. Evolution of the policy (2 academic hours).
  • Russian and the European Union. Russia and NATO (2 academic hours).
  • Russia and the USA (2 academic hours).
  • Russia within the European security system (2 academic hours).
  • The Eurasian Union (2 academic hours).
  • Russia and China (2 academic hours).
  • The lonely stranger: Ambition and reality in Russia’s policy (2 academic hours).
  • Defining the main conclusions from the course (2 academic hours).
  • A final test (2 academic hours).

Every participant will receive a certificate issued by VFUChernorizets Hrabarand the Moscow State UniversityM. Lomonosovon the acquired new knowledge and skills. The obtained ECTS credits can be recognized as training covered depending on the curriculum of the particular speciality, in which the participants study.

Leading lecturer of the Master class

Prof. Andrei Vladimirovich Zagorskiy, Ph. D.


 Prof. Andrei Zagorskiy is Head of Department Disarmament and Conflict Settlement at the Centre for International Security of the Institute for Global Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is a Professor at the Diplomatic Academy (Austria), a Professor of the Geneva Centre of Security Policy.

In the period 1992–1999 he was Vice-Rector for Research Work of the Moscow State University for International Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, and from 1999 until 2001 he was Senior Vice-President and Director of a Project of the East-West Institute. He is a member of the Russian Council for Political Studies, and a member of the International Expert Council of the Geneva Centre for Democratic Control over the Armed Forces.       




Vice-President of the Russian Association for Euro-Atlantic Cooperation (Geneva). Member of the Council for European Security (Moscow).
He is the author of more than 250 publications on the issues of global geopolitics. The scope of his scientific interests includes:

  • applied foreign policy analyses;
  • European security;
  • International relations in the post-Soviet area;
  • arms control;
  • theory and practice of the international negotiations and conflict settlement.


Price (for international participants)

  • 300 Euros. The amount includes – 7-day accommodation in a single room and catering (breakfast, lunch and dinner) in the campus of VFU “Chernorizets Hrabar” at preferential prices, as well as handout materials. The campus is on the territory of the University, at a 5-minute walk from the beach, and at a 30-minute bus drive from the centre of the city of Varna.
  • Upon request for accommodation in a double room, the price will be 260 Euros, and for accommodation in a triple room  -  220 Euros.
