Course MOSAIC ART (How is it done?)
Department of Architecture and Urban Studies

We will take you on a trip into the magical world of mosaics – an ancient art which has marked the glorious advance of more than one civilizations. Originating in ancient Babylon, this art becomes harmonious with the Greeks and acquires elegancy with the Romans. Finally the Byzantines give it that unique sophistication which still today evokes admiration and elan. Today, just as it was back then, the mosaic is a symbol of a sophisticated style and eternity.

Each piece of mosaic is part of a story, told by means of colours and nuances. We suggest that you learn to tell this story…

Course structure:

  • lecture module – 30 teaching hours, 3 ECTS credits;
  • practical module – 45 teaching hours, 4,5 ECTS credits;
  • visits to places of interest with included talks – 15 hours, 1,5 ECTS credits;

Target group

The course is part of the summer school organized by VFU “Chernorizets Hrabar”, and targets participants from across the world – students, doctoral students, architects, designers, artists and others who wish to obtain knowledge and practical skills, and desire to gain experience going deeper into the rich Bulgarian history.

Upon completion of the course each participant will be awarded a certificate for the acquired new knowledge and skills. The ECTS credits awarded can serve as grounds for recognition of prior learning, depending on the major of the participants.

Why should I choose this course?

  • Because it is taught in the city of Varna – the sea capital of Bulgaria! Varna is the city which in the summer attracts people from all over the world with its golden sands and warm sea.
  • Because it is taught in a region rich in history and culture! The ruins of the ancient towns Odessos (Varna) and Marcianololis (Devnya) have preserved rich historical heritage. It is here that the oldest gold in the world was found. You can visit Aladzha Monastery – a center of Christianity in ancient times. Varna also hosts numerous cultural events, amongst which are the emblematic for the city International Festival “Varna Summer” and the International Folklore Festival.
  • Because the university campus offers wonderful conditions for work and relaxation! The university facilities have been thoroughly refurbished; they are just a five-minute walk away from the sea and a thirty-minute ride by bus away from the city centre.
  • Because you will be immersed in the world of one of the most ancient arts in the world – the mosaic! You yourself will arrange your ideas, carrying the spirit of present times, in an ensemble of small pieces of glass, ceramics or tiny stones.
  • Because we will offer you the opportunity to have an unforgettable summer!
