Assoc. Prof. Eng. Daria Mihaleva, PhD – Head of The Construction of Buildings and Facilities Department at Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" Faculty of Architecture
Assoc. Prof. Mihaleva, we are on the eve of the Tenth Anniversary Edition of the Varna Spaghetti Engineering National Creative Skills Competition. Traditionally, the organizer and host of the event is your department. There is no doubt that this is one of the most successful formats for provoking the unconventional thinking and imagination of young people - students from vocational high schools, students from VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" and professionals from the construction industry... What's new this year?
The Varna Spaghetti Engineering competition is an emblem of the Construction of Buildings and Facilities Department at Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" Faculty of Architecture. The format of the competition has established itself over the years among vocational high schools in construction, architecture and geodesy in the country, with students and teachers eagerly awaiting the assignment for the structures and preparing with great trepidation and excitement. Some of the high schools, for example in Sofia, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora and Varna, organize internal rounds of the competition, with the winners presenting their school at Varna Spaghetti Engineering.
13 student teams from all over the country will take part in the tenth edition of the creative skills competition. They will measure their knowledge and strength in building towers of spaghetti in the form of an inverted truncated pyramid. Teams from the key vocational high schools in architecture, construction and geodesy will participate in the competition. Varna will be represented by five teams, Sofia and Burgas with two teams each, and Shumen, Haskovo, Veliko Tarnovo and Stara Zagora with one team each. Each team will have a consultant - a student from Varna Free University majoring in Construction of Buildings and Facilities or Architecture.
This year, not only students from vocational high schools in construction, architecture and geodesy in the country will compete, but also students from Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar". The student teams will build two towers connected by a bridge structure at a minimum height of 1 meter. The models will be tested for vertical load and horizontal seismic impact. The winner will be determined by audience vote. Traditionally, there is only one winning student team, but the partners of The Construction of Buildings and Facilities Department award their favorites.
