Conference "Preserving Balkan peoples' eating traditions and folklore" in Zlatograd

Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" and its partner - the University of Rumelia, Turkey took part in the 11th edition of the Balkan Scariade, which took place during the weekend in the Old Town of Zlatograd. This year the event which is traditional for the Rhodope mountains was accompanied by a gourmet conference "Preserving Balkan peoples' eating traditions and folklore".

At the opening of the conference Prof. Dr. Peter Hristov - Rector of VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" talked about the highlights in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs of Varna Free University. He spoke about the new additions in higher education aimed at digital transformation through the introduction of innovative educational technologies and the inclusion of a spiritual component that develops the emotional intelligence of students on the basis of arts and culture.


The Turkish partner was represented by the Rector of the University of Rumelia, Prof. Dr. Hazim Tamer Dodurka, by Assoc. Prof. Suleyman Özmen - Director of the Center for Scientific Research and students.

The lecture of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anelia Nenova, a lecturer from the Department of Security and Safety at Varna Free University, on the "Bread in the Historical Development of Civilization and the Bulgarian National Tradition", was welcomed with interest. Students from the Academic Dance Theater at VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" presented dances from the different folklore regions of Bulgaria within the presentation "The Folklore Dance of the Bulgarians" by Dr. Ivaylo Ivanov - lecturer in the Department of Arts.
 Prof. Zlatka Grigorova and Assist. Prof. Ivanka Shopova from the Department of Regional Development and Tourism at the University of Agribusiness and Rural Development in Plovdiv delivered the lecture "Traditional Foods, Eating Culture, Healthy Eating".
Dr. Svetoslav Dimitrov - Chief Physician of the first Bulgarian seaside resort "St. St. Constantine and Helena" spoke about the traditions in grape cure. The resort is known for its grape treatment station, established in 1933.
The second day of the Scariade was dedicated to tasting Bulgarian, Serbian, Greek and Turkish national cuisines.
The music and dances of the Balkan peoples were presented by Slavka Kalcheva - a graduate of Varna Free University, Nikos Merakhtsakis, Hristina Kamperidou, etc.
