EUROPEAN CLASSICS WAS READ IN THREE DIFFERENT LANGUAGES DURING THE READING MARATHON AT VFU "CHERNORIZETS HRABER"

19 Април 2023

Works by European authors were presented in three languages during the Reading Marathon, organized by the Department of Foreign Languages Teaching and Postgraduate Qualification and the University Library at Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar". Students, lecturers and staff presented excerpts from favorite authors and works in the original and translated into Bulgarian.

The event was honored by Prof. Dr. Galina Shamonina - Secretary General of the University, who pointed out that the library is the spiritual heart of VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar". "The road to the library is a road to knowledge, education and the spiritual world related to development," she said.
The students from the preparatory language course at Varna Free University took part in the Reading Marathon. They presented excerpts from their favorite works both in the original - in English and Russian, as well as in Bulgarian.
The lecturer in the Department of Foreign Languages Teaching and Postgraduate Qualification, Dimitar Marinov, made an intriguing presentation about the life and creative development of one of the greatest Bulgarian poets and translators, Elisaveta Bagryana. In 2023 we celebrate 130 years of her birth. A poem from the collection "Eternal and Holy" by Bagryana's first collection of poems, published in 1927, was read by Prof. Shamonina.

"Open Doors Week" takes place until April 24 at the University Library. Readers can view an exhibition featuring works by European authors. The events are dedicated to "23 April - World Book and Copyright Day" and the initiative of the European Commission "Day of European Authors". The Director of the Library, Daniela Cherneva, told the students the story of this special day - a symbolic date for the world literature. It is related to the life and death of great authors such as Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Maurice Druon, Halldór Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Vallejo. This makes it a natural choice for the UNESCO General Conference on this day for the whole world to pay tribute to books and their authors, encouraging everyone, and especially young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and to recognize the contribution of those who contribute to the socio-cultural human progress. The idea for the holiday originates from Catalonia, where a book is traditionally given as a gift on April 23, the day of St. George the Victorious.
The library of VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" has over 116,000 books.
