05 August 2019

The first dance workshop in Bulgarian folklore, organized by the specialwty "Choreography" of Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" went by with great interest. Lovers of Bulgarian rhythms from all over the country took part in it. Among the most active participants were the dancers from the dance groups "Plamak" from Burgas, "Balkanika" from Gorna Oryahovitsa, "Lazur" from Burgas, "Pendara", "Nastroenie" from Aksakovo and "Folklore Magic" from Stara Zagora.

For three days and on three stages at Varna Free University, the dancers mastered new steps and combinations under the supervision of the professors from the "Choreography" major at Varna Free University - Dr. Ivaylo Ivanov - a choreographer from the Academic Dance Theater at VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Katya Kayryakova, who is also the chief artistic director of Shumen Ensemble. Part of the training was taught by Mario Egov - director and choreographer at the famous professional folklore ensemble "Strandja". Each of the lecturers showed traditional but unpopular hora (circle dances), and the clubs will enrich their repertoire and skills.

"Let young people study choreography, learn Bulgarian folk dances, and encourage the Bulgarian people to dance! Nothing's better than that," said Denitsa Zhelyazkova, head of folk dance school "Folklore Magic" in Stara Zagora.
"Thank you for the opportunity to learn from such professionals as the professors from Varna Free University. I hope that the folklore workshop will become a tradition," said Bogdana Todorova, a dancer at the Plamak Club in Burgas.

Peter Petarchov, who is the head of the Balkan Folklore Club "Balkanika" from Gorna Oryahovitsa, and graduated with a degree in "Choreography - Bulgarian Folk Dances" at VFU, added that the university gives extremely good knowledge of Bulgarian folklore and dance, and the new combinations and circle dances, which the dancers learned during the workshop will be included in the repertoire of the club.

From August 9 to 11, Varna Free University will welcome the eighth edition of the Summer Salsa Fest, organized by the Malambo Dance School and VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar". The three-day dance marathon will again feature the special participation of students and professors in the field of Choreography. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maria Kardzhieva has prepared a master class in folk dance, and the Academic Dance Theater will present a show program. Behind "Malambo" are the names of Maria Lilyanova and Martin Bozukov - graduates of the specialty "Choreography - Contemporary Dance Theater" at Varna Free University.
