Students from Varna Free University visited the defensive facilities of the oldest salt-producing and urban center

15 May 2025

Students majoring in National Security at Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar” had a practical seminar at the prehistoric salt -producing and urban center of Provadia-Solnitsata – a unique archaeological complex dating from 5600 to 4350 BC. The seminar was taught by the rector of the university and lecturer in national security, Prof. Dr. Petar Hristov.

First to fourth-year students majoring in Protection of National Security and Counteraction to Crime and Public Order Protection, full-time study participated in the training.

The aim of the seminar was to enrich the students’ knowledge and build a deeper understanding of the strategic importance of fortification systems since ancient times. The participants were introduced to the radial defense system of the prehistoric fortress and examined the discovered defensive facilities in detail. The unique fortification structure has no analogue in the prehistory of Europe – similar systems appeared only about 3500 years later in France and Spain, which emphasizes the high level of organization of military construction.

The programme also included a visit to the Historical Museum in Provadia, where artifacts from the archaeological excavations in Solnitsata are exhibited. There, the students also learned a curious cultural fact – the masters of the famous “singing painted carts”, described in the story “The Song of the Wheels” by Yordan Yovkov, were precisely Provadia craftsmen.

The tour of the museum and the archaeological complex was extremely fascinating and useful thanks to the tour guide Georgi, who managed to connect the history of antiquity with the topics of security and cultural identity.
