Students majoring in National Security and Law held a practical training session at Provadia-Solnitsata

22 april 2026

First-year students majoring in National Security and Law full-time at Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar” took part in a practical training session at the prehistoric salt-production and urban center Provadia-Solnitsata. The training was attended by the Rector Prof. Petar Hristov, the Vice President Yani Yanev, the Dean of the Faculty of Law Assoc. Prof. Elisaveta Kalinova, as well as faculty members and staff.

The session was taught by Prof. Petar Hristov, who introduced students to the strategic importance of fortification systems as far back as prehistoric times. Participants learned about the radial defensive system of the prehistoric fortress and examined the uncovered defensive structures. The archaeological complex dates from 5600 to 4350 BC and demonstrates an exceptionally high level of organization in construction and defense among early European societies.

In February 2026, the European Commission awarded the prehistoric salt-production and urban center Provadia-Solnitsata the European Heritage Label - recognition granted to sites of outstanding importance to Europe’s cultural identity and the preservation of its shared heritage.

The program also included a visit to the Historical Museum in Provadia, where students explored artifacts from the excavations at Solnitsata and expanded their knowledge of the region’s cultural heritage. The museum also highlighted an interesting fact about local craftsmen from Provadia who created the so-called “singing painted carts,” known from the short story “The Song of the Wheels” by Yordan Yovkov.

The training was marked by active student participation and a clear connection between historical knowledge and contemporary issues of security and cultural identity.
