The team of the Varna-based publishing house “Yasna Kniga” visited the students from the Graphic Design programme at Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar” and shared their practical experience in creating contemporary children's books. The meeting took place within the course Book Design, taught by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Viktor Petkov, and was organized in partnership with Amorfа Youth Foundation and Maria Badzhakova as part of the initiatives dedicated to the European Authors’ Day and the Day of Reading.
The guest speakers — the children's author Tanya Petkova, the graphic designer Petko Petkov, the owner of “Marka Collective” studio, the illustrator Monika Yaneva, and the illustrator and graphic designer Dimitar Ilchev — presented the mission of the publishing house and the creative process behind the development of a children's book. They discussed each stage: from writing the text and shaping the visual concept to prepress preparation, collaboration with design studios, and working with printing houses.
“Yasna Kniga” Publishing House also collaborates with the illustrator and graphic designer Katrin Eftimova, an alumna of our university.
During the session, students followed the process in which the author, publisher, illustrator, and graphic designer work together to create a complete book, as well as the professional steps required for producing high-quality printed editions. The students had the opportunity to ask questions related to publishing practices, visual storytelling, and the role of graphic design in children's literature.
The visit benefited the training of Graphic Design students by giving them real insight into the creative and technical processes of contemporary book publishing. The initiative is part of the long-term partnership between Amorfа Youth Foundation and Varna Free University in the fields of architecture, fashion design, graphic and interior design, within which students and lecturers actively participate in the foundation’s cultural and educational projects.
