Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar” Alumnus Oversees Fire Safety at Sofia Airport

05 october 2026

Behind the daily operations of Vasil Levski Sofia Airport is the work of specialists responsible for ensuring its safety. Among them is Eng. Dimo Genchev, a graduate of Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar.” He completed his Bachelor’s degree in “Fire Safety and Civil Protection” and his Master’s degree in “Fire and Emergency Safety” in 2024. Today, he works as a Fire and Emergency Safety Engineer at the airport.

Both degree programmes prepare specialists for highly responsible careers in fire safety, risk prevention, and the protection of people. Eng. Genchev’s professional journey demonstrates how the knowledge acquired during university studies can be applied in a complex and dynamic working environment.

His responsibilities cover fuel storage facilities, warehouses containing hazardous substances, passenger terminals, airport runways, and a wide range of other facilities. Eng. Genchev organizes and oversees compliance with fire and emergency safety requirements - work that demands knowledge, precision, and a high level of professional expertise.

The construction of the new terminal and the continuous technological upgrades to the airport’s infrastructure present him with new professional challenges. He approaches them with a smile and with the sense of responsibility of an engineer whose work is directly connected to the safety of thousands of people.

As a member of the alumni community of Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar,” Eng. Genchev continues to maintain close ties with the Department of Construction of Buildings and Facilities. His connection with the university remains strong even after graduation - now serving as a meeting point between academic knowledge and hands-on professional experience.
