Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" provides wider array of different languages

29 January 2019

The Foreign Language Teaching Department at Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" widens the array of the studied foreign languages adding Italian and Portuguese to them. Complementing the array of languages performs the strategic task of the university for the internationalization of education.

As early as the summer semester of the academic year 2018/2019, VFU will offer students the opportunity to study Portuguese as an optional course. This was agreed between Assoc. Prof. Krasimir Nedyalkov, PhD, President of VFU and Anaisa Gordino, Director of the Portuguese Cultural and Language Centre "Camoes  Sofia". The classes will be led by a professional language philologist and the students will have the opportunity to participate in projects and competitions related to the country of José Rodrigues dos Santos. The largest private university in the country has been chosen as a partner by Camoes Sofia because of its long tradition of foreign language teaching and its prestige as an innovative, "different and better" university.

VFU has been in contact with leading Portuguese universities for many years and has implemented incoming and outgoing Erasmus mobility for students and lecturers.

"Our university encourages students to learn more than one foreign language, as multilingualism is an element of the European identity. We are convinced that the better knowledge of modern European languages facilitates communication and exchange of information and thus promotes mobility, mutual understanding and co-operation," said Prof. Galina Shamonina, PhD, Head of the Department.

From the next academic year, the students of the Faculty of Architecture will have the opportunity to learn Italian in the framework of a cultural project of the University.

Since the beginning of this academic year, the Japanese language teacher Fumiko Kobayashi has been working at Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar". In addition to the Japanese characters, she  also conveys the beauty of the culture of the Country of the Rising Sun to seven groups of students, lecturers and employees. A tremendous interest in the Japanese language courses is shown by the students of the professional areas of International Relations, Architecture, Psychology and Law.

The study of foreign languages enhances the competitiveness of the students of Varna Free University and gives them the opportunity to enter in their professional portfolios the knowledge of two or three foreign languages, among them also rare languages. The interest towards Russian and English remains the strongest. Just a few days ago, the Russian Centre of VFU celebrated its 10th birthday.
