A representative group of lecturers and students from Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar” took part in the festive procession for 24th May -  Bulgarian Enlightenment and Culture and Slavonic Literacy Day.

Thousands of Varna citizens came at 10 o’clock at “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” square for the festive program in which The academic dance theatre of Varna Free University took part. A while before that at 9,20 a thanksgiving service was held at the Cathedral.

Sixty-nine groups of representatives from different schools and universities participated in the procession. The Bulgarian national flag was elevated at the square in front of the Cathedral, followed by a lively folklore dancing. Big balloons in the shape of the Cyrilic letters  soared in the air.

“Today is the brightest Bulgarian holiday – the 24th May, The day of the Bulgarian alphabet. This is the day when we have to manifest our respect to all those people who tirelessly and day-to-day preserve our Bulgarian identity and teach patriotism to the new generations. We are what we think and what we speak. Let us teach our children to think, act and speak positively. There is no other more exciting event in the cultural calendar of our city than the 24th May procession. Thank you for making it possible to share the event altogether. May we respect our literacy and culture with which we associate ourselves. Let us believe that these wonderful children who are the future will keep Bulgaria in their hearts. Happy holiday to all!” - said the mayor of Varna, Ivan Portnih in his congratulatory address.

The festive procession together with the Mayor, the district governor Stoyan Passev and the Metropolitan of Varna and Preslav – Yoan, set off under the sound of the festive anthem, played by the brass bend of the Bulgarian Navy. They were traditionally followed by the group of students and teachers from “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” elementary school and the winners of “Varna” award for 2018.
