VARNA RESIDENTS DELIGHTED BY THE NEW RELIEF MAP OF THE SEASIDE GARDEN, MADE BY A VFU STUDENT

27 July 2019

Today, Kristiyan Ivanov, a VFU fifth-year student, majoring in Architecture, unveiled the Relief Map of the Historical Core of the Seaside Garden in Varna, on which he and his team has been working for two years.

The financing of the project involve Varna Free University, the Culture Fund of Varna Municipality and Kristiyan’s family.

Today, special guests at the opening of the sculpture, which is located at the entrance of the Seaside Garden, were the Deputy Mayor Peycho Peychev, Prof. Anna Nedyalkova, D.Sc. - chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Varna Free University, Assoc. Prof. Krasimir Nedyalkov, PhD - president of the University, Yani Yanev - vice president, Prof. Petar Hristov, PhD - rector, Corr. Mem. Prof. Arch. Atanas Kovachev - dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Arch. Viktor Buzev - chief architect of Varna, Anton Novak's relatives, hundreds of colleagues, friends and tourists. Particular attention was paid to the visually impaired residents of Varna, for who in the unique map of Kristiyan the sites were made in special proportions and described in Braille.

"This project contains everything that Varna Free University strives for - respect for history, true patriotism, social entrepreneurship, creativity, meeting with new technology," said Prof. Anna Nedyalkova, D.Sc. in her greeting. She wished Christian Ivanov and his team to carve their names with valuable monuments of culture, as Anton Novak and the Shkorpil brothers did. The Deputy Mayor Peycho Peychev pointed out that the project is a positive example of the partnership between the institutions and the universities in Varna.

Kristiyan Ivanov has been working on the project for two years with the support of his lecturers from Varna Free University.

The pedestal of the sculpture is a new generation of concrete that is recyclable to 99 percent, and the 3D models of the 28 sights are made of brass.

The sculpture is unique for Bulgaria and besides information in Bulgarian and in English there is also information in Braille to help people with visual impairments. The idea is for the sculpture to remain a long-term part of the park environment.

"What happened today is very important for Varna, for the Varna residents and for the visually impaired," commented Veselina Stoilova, ombudsman of the disabled people in the Seaside Capital. And she added:

"This model is unique to the country; it has exquisite work of the buildings and of the Braille designations." I like the map very much, not only because I know all the sites and enjoy them, but such relief maps I have seen in other countries - The Czech Republic, Italy, they have no Braille designations and just represent a pile of figures and you need someone to explain what is what. If anyone breaks that map, there's nothing to win, so please, vandals, stand out of trouble!"

The attendees at the opening today expressed their admiration for the idea and implementation of the relief map. Varna residents said that it was made with a lot of hard work and love and they hope that the new Varna attraction will be protected from encroachments.

Immediately after the opening, Radio Varna wrote: "Varna residents delighted by the new relief map of the Seaside Garden"
