WORTHY PRESENTATION OF THE VFU CRIMINAL LAW TEAM IN THE NATIONAL COMPETITION

The second national competition for solving criminal cases was held in Sofia at the weekend. It involved 10 teams of the following universities: St Kliment Ohridski Sofia University, the University of National and World Economy, the South – West University, Angel Kanchev University of Ruse, New Bulgarian University and Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar".

Our university was well presented by the students of law: Stefan Daskalov - captain and Viktoria Todorova, 4th year, Yordan Marinov – 5th year, Lina Yordanova, Daniela Todorova and Sibel Hyusein 3rd – year students. Coaches of the team are Judge Ivanichka Slavkova - Deputy Chairman of Varna District Court, Svetla Daskalova, Svetoslava Koleva – Angelova    and Marin Atanasov - Judges in the Regional Court. Judges Atanasov and Koleva accompanied the students to Sofia.

"The competition was held in three rounds. In the first one, whose host was Sofia University, the teams had three hours to draft an indictment in writing. The factual situation in the case was related to committing a robbery and a rape. In this round, two teams dropped out. They received the lowest marks by the three-member panel of judges with a chairperson of the Specialized Criminal Court," said the captain of the team of Varna Free University Stefan Daskalov.

The second round took place at the Palais de justice, in the halls where the sessions of the Supreme Court of Cassation are. The teams were randomly divided into pairs - defence and prosecution, with elimination being direct. The teams had two hours to get acquainted with the case, after which the competition character consisted in pronouncing a plea before a court. The case was related to the crimes of "attempted rape," "robbery," and "fraud."




The final of the competition was held in the Festive Hall of the Palais de justice in Sofia. The two teams of Sofia University reached the final, and the chairperson of the judicial panel was a judge of the Supreme Court of Cassation. The case was filled with a lot of facts, as the persecution team rightly qualified the act as a murder in exceeding the limits of inevitable defence.
