Young programmers, teachers and parents to compete on the International Scratch Day – 12 May

25 Април 2019

The International Scratch Day will be held in Varna on 12 May  at 10.00 am in Yunashki salon. The event is organized by the Municipality of Varna in partnership with Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar". More than 150 students, teachers and parents from Varna are expected to participate on the Scratch Day, demonstrating knowledge, skills and competences in programming and STEM projects.

Scratch is a programming environment that creates animated stories, interactive games, and movie scenarios. It allows children, while having fun with images, sounds and animations, to easily learn the principles of visual programming. Scratch gives you the freedom to model different objects from the environment and thus to enrich children's culture and develop creative thinking and communication skills. Since 2018, Scratch programming has been included in the 3rd grade Computer Modeling textbooks. During the Scratch Day, parents of third-grade students will be able to learn on the spot what skills computer modeling develops in school or in extracurricular activities.

On 12 May, for the students of the 3rd and 4th grade, an animation competition will be held and for the students from the 3rd – 7th  grade - a competition for the most attractive computer game. For teachers and trainers there is a methodological development competition in which they can participate in the topics entitled "Visual Programming with Scratch", "Computational Thinking and "Scratch", as well as "Scratch and STE (A) M". The student teams will be assessed in the "STE (A) M Friends" competition, and if the team includes a child and their parents, their project will compete in "STE (A) M Family".

The team of computer sciences at VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" has prepared methodological resources for teachers to provide on the Scratch Day.
