FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE
CONSTRUCTION OF BUILDINGS AND FACILITIES DEPARTMENT
PROFESSIONAL AREA:  ARCHITECTURE, CIVIL ENGINEERING AND GEODESY

Programme: Construction of Buildings and Facilities with a profile "Water Supply and Sewerage"

Awarded qualification:  Civil Engineer in Water Supply and Sewerage

Level of qualification:  Bachelor

Length of programme: years (8 semesters)

Number of credits: 240

Field of study (ISCED-F): 0732 Building and civil engineering (06.4-582)

Specific admission requirements: Diploma for completed secondary or higher education in Bulgarian and foreign educational institutions. Entry is based on admission exams.

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning:

  • Information is available from the ECTS coordinator of the Construction of Buildings and Facilities Department – Assoc. Prof. Rositsa Petkova-Slipets, Eng., PhD, Tel: +359 52 359 589/588, e-mail: sss@vfu.bg;
  • The recognition of credits procedure is based on documents submitted by the candidate:
  • Diploma or a transcript of prior learning;
  • International foreign language diplomas and certificates (English – Cambridge FCE, TOEFL; German - Zertifikat Deutsch, Deutsche Sprachdiplom (DSD), Zweite Stufe; Russian – ТРКИ; French – DELF; Spanish – DELE);
  • International computer skills diplomas and certificates, corresponding to ECDL (The European Computer Driving Licence).
  • Allocation of credits is done in compliance with the respective major's curriculum, and is based on the diplomas and certificates submitted by the candidate.

Qualification requirements and regulations, including graduation requirements: To acquire a degree of "Bachelor" are required 240 credits, of which 180.5 credits from compulsory courses, 36 credits of electives, 13.5 credits of optional courses and 10 credits from diploma project defence. In Varna Free University a credit equals 30 lessons, of which 10 contact hours (lectures and seminars) and 20 hours independent work. A requirement for acquiring professional qualification is the development and defence of the diploma project - a comprehensive synthesis of knowledge and aptitude for the practical work of the future engineer. The topics for the diploma project are taken from actual constructions. Much of the developments are afterwards implemented in practice. Only those students, who have successfully completed their training semesters and all exams from the curriculum, shall be allowed to elaborate a diploma projects. Diploma project defence takes place in front of the State Board of Examiners and is a final exam, which is the basis for the acquisition of the Bachelor degree.

Profile of the programme: The programme "Construction of Buildings and Facilities" with a profile "Water Supply and Sewerage" aims to train specialists to meet the demand of the water supply and sewerage sector, which is among the priorities of the National Strategy for Development of the Water Sector of the Republic of Bulgaria, adopted in 2012. The training builds upon the fundamental engineering courses, completed within the general training module in the first 5 semesters, and provides comprehensive specialized knowledge in the field of town and building water supply and sewerage systems, natural water and waste water treatment etc. Students are provided with a wide-spectrum basic training on issues related to drinking water supply and the removal of waste water of various sites, the organisation, implementation and operation of the systems and facilities as part of water infrastructure, the protection of surface and undersurface water sources from contamination, the water purification methods, the technical solutions allowing water extraction and control over water resources, issues which are central to achieving integrated water management.

The learning material for the specialized courses is based on the new European regulations and standards for design, implementation and operation of the systems and facilities in the water supply and sewerage sector. The Bachelor programme Construction of Buildings and Facilities with a profile "Water Supply and Sewerage" has a national accreditation. Graduates can obtain a license in accordance with the requirements of the Chamber of engineers in the investment design.

Programme learning outcomes: Graduates in programme Construction of Buildings and Facilities with a profile "Water Supply and Sewerage" have knowledge and skills enabling them to:

  • Choose the right building materials in order to guarantee sufficient extent of conductivity, reliability and durability of water supply and sewerage systems;
  • Work with the latest computer programmes in water supply and sewerage system design;
  • Apply the construction and technical regulations in force at all stages of the construction of water supply and sewerage systems;
  • Design water supply and sewerage systems which comply with the requirements of the legal framework for construction;
  • Apply the technology of implementation of building and urban water supply and sewerage systems;
  • Organize and manage water supply and sewerage construction.

The obtained knowledge and skills will allow the future specialists to solve problems related to water supply, removal and treatment of waste water from buildings and facilities, as well as to make assessments related to water supply and sewerage.

* The course is studied by students in part-time training

Mode of study: Full-time/Part-time

Examination regulations and grading scale: The programme includes courses from different scientific fields, which fulfils the requirement of interdisciplinary and wide spectrum training. This defines the various requirements in assessing students' knowledge. Detailed description of methods and evaluation criteria for each discipline and the opportunity to inform the reasons for evaluation are given in the syllabi.

Obligatory or optional mobility windows: Students can take part in appropriate programs for student's mobility available in Varna Free University.

Work placement(s): In the curriculum on some of the special disciplines practices are provided that take place in Bulgarian and foreign companies and laboratories working in the area of design, construction and operation of water supply and sewerage systems.

Work-based learning: In the curriculum of the Bachelors' program in all special subjects, developing of course projects and tasks is provided. The topics of the course projects, as well as these of the diploma project are taken from actual construction topics. Many of the developments are later implemented in the practice.

Occupational profiles of graduates: Graduates will be able to pursue careers in the state and public sectors as managers and staff at design studios, construction and assembly companies, construction labs; specialists at the operating water companies; staff and experts at investment, control and monitoring authorities; specialists at ministries and their departments; experts at municipal administrations; teachers at vocational secondary schools etc.

Access for further training: Students successfully completed their training in the degree of Bachelor have the necessary skills to continue their education at a higher level of qualification - Master programmes on:

  • Building Constructions;
  • Road Construction;
  • Water Supply and Sewerage with two profiles: "Water supply networks and facilities" and  "Water purification"
  • Building engineering
  • Fire-safety equipment and automation

After acquiring the Master degree, students can apply for further training and research in doctoral programs:

  • Building construction;
  • Building Materials, Products and Technology of their production;
  • Techniques of Labor Safety and Fire Equipment.
