Specific admission requirements: Candidates need to be Bachelor degree holders in civil engineering or other construction engineering majors, and have a higher education diploma grade point average no lower than Good according to the Bulgarian assessment scale.

  • The recognition of credits procedure is based on documents submitted by the candidate:
  • Diploma or a transcript of prior learning;
  • International foreign language diplomas and certificates (English – Cambridge FCE, TOEFL; German - Zertifikat Deutsch, Deutsche Sprachdiplom (DSD), Zweite Stufe; Russian – ТРКИ; French – DELF; Spanish – DELE);
  • International computer skills diplomas and certificates, corresponding to ECDL (The European Computer Driving Licence).
  • Allocation of credits is done in compliance with the respective major's curriculum, and is based on the diplomas and certificates submitted by the candidate.

 

Qualification requirements and regulations, including graduation requirements*: In order to obtain a Master degree, students have to accumulate 90 credits, out of which 66 credits are awarded for compulsory courses, 9 credits are awarded for elective courses and 15 credits are awarded for diploma project defense. Graduates of other but similar technical majors are required to sit equivalency examinations for a total of 30 credits.

 

Profile of the programme: Master programme "Water Supply and Sewerage, profile Water Treatment" aims to train specialists with a solid theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the design, construction, and operation of different kinds of water supply, sewerage and water treatment systems. The programme curriculum takes into account the experience of leading Bulgarian and foreign higher education institutions, as well as the latest trends in the training of civil engineers in the field of water supply and sewerage. The choice of courses included in the curriculum aims to ensure broad profile training. Students will be provided with basic professional training on issues related to drinking water supply and removal of waste water of various sites, the organization, construction and operation of the systems and facilities creating the water infrastructure, the protection of surface and undersurface water sources from contamination, the water purification methods, the technical solutions allowing water extraction and control over water resources, which form the main criteria for integrated water management. Students learn about design methodology in compliance with the national and European legislation in force regarding water supply and sewerage systems, and how to use specialized programme products when designing water supply and sewerage networks and facilities. The high quality of training is further guaranteed by the work placements and internships at Bulgarian and foreign companies and laboratories involved in the construction and operation of water supply, sewerage water treatment systems, which are a part of the programme curriculum.

 

Master's programme "Water Supply and Sewerage" profiled in Water Treatment has a national accreditation. The graduates can obtain the legal capacity of a designer in accordance with the Law on Chamber of Engineers in Investment Design.

 

Progrmme learning outcomes: Graduates of the major "Water Supply and Sewerage" specialization "Water treatment" have knowledge and skills to:

  • Perform preliminary feasibility research work for the construction and operation of treatment plants for water and wastewater, water supply systems and equipment for them;
  • Prepare conceptual, technical and detailed designs for treatment plants for water and wastewater, design solutions for water supply and sewerage of settlements, industrial enterprises, resorts, agricultural facilities, residential and public buildings, etc.;
  • Develop projects of building water supply and sewerage systems (domestic, industrial, public and agricultural);
  • Make measurements and design the constructions and elements of the water treatment systems, water supply and sewerage systems and wastewater purification plants such as piping, septic and pressure tanks, shafts, rain water overflows, siphons and others.
  • Develop optimal technical solutions using modern methods of design, materials and technology to realize the full technical and operational characteristics of the newly designed or reconstructed sites.
  • Use latest information technologies in the area of design, construction and operation of  water treatment plants, water supply and sewerage systems;
  • Apply current construction and technical regulations in all stages of the construction of water treatment plants, water supply and sewerage systems;
  • Know the stages of the investment process and freely use the design documentation in other parts of the investment design;
  • Organize and manage the technological implementation and operation of water treatment plants, buildings and urban water supply and sewerage systems.

At Varna Free University Chernorizets Hrabar" one credit corresponds to 30 hours student workload, which includes 10 hours of lectures and seminars and 20 hours out-of-class workload.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading:

The programme curriculum includes disciplines from different scientific areas, thus achieving interdisciplinary and broad profile training. This sets a variety of assessment criteria to determine the knowledge acquired by students. Detailed descriptions of the assessment methods and criteria for each course, as well as the feedback opportunities, are available in each course syllabus.

 

Obligatory or optional mobility windows: Students can take part in appropriate programs for student's mobility available in Varna Free University.

 

Work placement: In the curriculum of some special courses practices and internships are provided that take place in Bulgarian and foreign companies, organizations and laboratories, working in the area of construction and operation of water supply and sewerage systems and water treatment plants.

 

Work-based learning: In the curriculum of the Master's programme Water Supply and Sewerage, profile Water Treatment" in all special courses development of project assignments and course assignments and tasks is provided. The topics of the project assignments, as well as the diploma project are taken from actual water supply and sewerage topics.

 

Occupational profiles of graduates: Graduates will be able to pursue careers in the state and public sectors as:

- Managers and executives in operation companies, water treatment plants, design offices, construction-and-installation companies, etc.

- Staff and experts at investment, control and monitoring authorities;

- Lecturers and researches at research institutes, etc

 

Access to further studies: Each student, successfully completed training with the degree of "Master" has the necessary skills to continue his/her education at a higher level of qualification - degree "Doctor" in the doctoral programs:
